KADUNA — The remains of Mary Habila, a 26-year-old nurse who died under controversial circumstances at the country home of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, have been quietly interred in Kaduna State.
The quiet burial follows weeks of intense public outcry, grief, and a fierce deadlock between her family, civil society organizations, and state authorities over the handling of her remains and the demand for an independent medical examination.

Habila, who served on the medical team linked to the Minister’s residence, passed away under disputed circumstances, triggering nationwide scrutiny. While investigators and public advocacy groups have pressed for a thorough forensic examination to ascertain the exact cause of death, disagreements surrounding cultural customs and the timing of an autopsy stalled initial procedures.
The Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) has since waded deeply into the matter, initiating legal action at the High Court in Kaduna. The coalition is seeking significant damages alongside a comprehensive, independent judicial inquiry and autopsy to clear lingering suspicions surrounding the tragedy.
As the legal battles mount and accountability questions persist, community leaders and human rights advocates continue to demand transparency from the relevant authorities to ensure justice is served for the late nurse’s family.
