The National Population Commission has commenced nationwide digital registration of births and deaths through its VitalReg platform, marking a major change in how Nigerians can record some of the most important events in their lives.

The digital system became operational across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory from July 1, 2026, according to the commission.

But the figures behind the initiative reveal why it matters. Nigeria’s birth registration coverage currently stands at about 57 per cent, while death registration remains below 20 per cent.

That means millions of births and deaths may not enter the country’s official civil-registration system. The consequences are larger than the absence of a certificate.

Reliable population records are essential for planning. Government needs to know where people are being born and how populations are changing. Health authorities need accurate information about deaths.

Education planners need demographic information to anticipate school demand. Social protection programmes also require reliable identity and population data.

The VitalReg system is intended to make registration easier through digital tools. That is a significant step. But digitisation alone will not solve the problem.

Nigeria still has communities with poor internet connectivity, limited digital literacy and inadequate access to electricity. The people most likely to remain outside official registration systems may also be the people least able to navigate digital platforms.

The success of the initiative will therefore depend on how well the NPC combines online registration with accessible physical support. There is also an important identity connection.

Nigeria’s growing digital identity ecosystem means civil registration can provide foundational information that supports other government services.

But that makes data protection equally important. Birth and death records contain sensitive personal information.

The government must therefore protect the information it is encouraging Nigerians to provide. The NPC’s initiative is ultimately about more than certificates. It is about giving the Nigerian state a more accurate picture of its population.

A government that does not know how many people are being born, where they are being born or how many people are dying is planning with incomplete information.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the NPC’s VitalReg platform is now operational nationwide, while official figures show significant gaps in both birth and death registration.

If properly implemented, the digital system could become an important foundation for better population planning. But its success should be measured by one simple question. How many Nigerians who previously had no official record will now enter the system?
