
Tragedy struck the Ihima community in the Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State after four members of a single family died mysteriously following the consumption of a local cassava flour delicacy, Amala. The grim situation deepened when the household’s dog also reportedly died after eating leftovers of the same meal.
Government Response and Investigation
In response to the developing crisis, the Kogi State Government has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the fatalities. According to a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo expressed deep shock and sorrow over the incident.
The governor has formally directed the State Commissioner for Health to spearhead a full-scale probe to ascertain the root cause:
- Focus Areas: Public health officials are examining potential food poisoning, severe food contamination, or any other underlying medical or environmental factors.
- Evidence Gathering: Relevant food samples and biological evidence are being collected and analyzed in line with standard public health protocols.
- The Animal Fatality: Officials noted that the sudden death of the family dog after consuming the food is a core component guiding toxicological inquiries.
Public Appeal
The state government has urged residents of Ihima and the wider public to remain calm, avoid panic, and refrain from premature speculation until scientific conclusions are reached by authorized health experts. Governor Ododo extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the local community, assuring citizens that comprehensive updates will be shared as soon as verified facts emerge.
