LAGOS — Tragedy struck along the ever-busy Badagry Expressway in the early hours of Saturday, as five adult males lost their lives in a horrific head-on collision near the Mowo Bus Stop.

The fatal accident, which occurred around 5:16 a.m. at the Sawmill axis, involved a commercial-bound Iveco truck and a private Toyota Camry.

According to preliminary findings released by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Toyota Camry—bearing registration number FKJ 630KS—was traveling at a dangerous velocity. Driven by suspected over-speeding and severe recklessness, the driver reportedly lost total control of the vehicle.

The sedan veered off its path, crossed the median divider into the opposite lane, and smashed directly into the oncoming Iveco truck (registered T28081 LA). The impact of the collision was catastrophic, instantly killing all five occupants trapped inside the Camry.

Swift Inter-Agency Response

Prompted by distress calls from eyewitnesses, LASEMA activated its Dolphin Team from the Igando Base, arriving swiftly at the scene alongside a formidable coalition of emergency responders.

Operatives from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and officers from the Nigeria Police Force (Morogbo Division) joined forces to manage the crisis.

The rescue teams carefully extricated the remains of the victims, bagging them with dignity before handing them over to the FRSC. Heavy-duty tow trucks were subsequently deployed to clear the mangled wreckage off the corridor, paving the way for the full restoration of vehicular movement after hours of gridlock. The recovered vehicles were later towed to the Morogbo Police Division.

Safety Concerns Mount

Expressing deep grief over the loss of lives, LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu commiserated with the families of the deceased. He issued a stern warning to motorists plying Lagos highways, particularly during early morning hours when low visibility and deceptive traffic conditions heighten road hazards.

”Road safety is a collective responsibility,” Oke-Osanyintolu noted, urging drivers to strictly shun over-speeding, wrongful overtaking, and reckless habits that continue to turn major expressways into death traps.
