SEC Clears Three Crypto Firms as Nigeria Tightens Digital Asset Regulation

Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission has admitted three virtual asset service providers into its Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme as the country continues to tighten oversight of the cryptocurrency industry.

The companies include Blockchain, Pisi Payments Solution Limited and Yellow Card Financial Limited. Their admission gives them Approval-in-Principle status to operate within the defined scope of the regulatory programme, subject to the SEC’s requirements.

The development matters because Nigeria has become one of Africa’s most active cryptocurrency markets.

Digital assets are used by Nigerians for investment, payments and cross-border transactions. But the rapid growth of the sector has also created regulatory challenges.

Poorly governed operators can create significant financial risks. The SEC’s regulatory approach is therefore an attempt to bring more order to a market that has grown faster than conventional regulation.
