ABUJA — Nigeria’s Lassa fever outbreak has crossed 1,000 confirmed cases in 2026, with 237 deaths recorded and a worsening case fatality rate that now stands at 23.7 percent, according to the latest situation report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

The report, covering epidemiological week 30 (July 20–26, 2026), shows the outbreak spans 116 local government areas across 23 states, with five states, Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo and Benue, accounting for 86 percent of all confirmed cases.

Findings show that 53 healthcare workers have been infected since the start of the year, a figure the NCDC itself has flagged as a signal of significant occupational exposure and a risk of transmission within hospitals.

This year’s case fatality rate already exceeds the 18.8 percent recorded over the same period in 2025, when 825 cases and 155 deaths had been logged by week 30.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the NCDC attributes the worsening trend to late presentation by patients, the cost of treatment discouraging early hospital visits, poor environmental sanitation in high-burden communities and limited awareness at the grassroots, factors that have trailed Nigeria’s Lassa response for years without a lasting fix.

Response Under WayIn response, the agency has developed a 30-day Healthcare Worker Protection Plan, done in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, aimed at training frontline workers, strengthening infection control and pre-positioning protective equipment in high-burden states.

The NCDC says technical support for investigation and mitigation continues in affected states as the year progresses.
