AMSTERDAM — Official data compiled by the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) and the Asylum Information Database (AIDA) reveals that at least 1,917 Nigerian nationals applied for asylum in the Netherlands across 2024 and 2025.
The figures highlight a steady upward trajectory in migration pressures, positioning Nigeria consistently among the top African countries of origin for asylum seekers in Western Europe.
- Rising Figures: Applications submitted by Nigerians grew by 5.9% year-on-year, moving from 931 total applicants in 2024 to 986 in 2025.
- Application Breakdown: The 2024 figures comprised 770 first-time applicants and 161 subsequent applicants, while the 2025 numbers included 813 first-time seekers and 173 repeat filers. These tallies exclude family reunification cases, meaning the actual volume of Nigerians integrating into Dutch society is likely higher.
- Global and Regional Standing: Globally, Nigeria ranked ninth among major applicant nationalities in 2024, climbing to sixth position in 2025. Regionally, Nigeria trails only Eritrea (4,684), Algeria (2,670), and Somalia (2,503) in cumulative African applications over the two-year span.
Strict Scrutiny and Landmark Legal Shifts
Decision-outcomes data for 2025 underscores a stringent policy environment for claimants. Out of 515 first-instance decisions processed for Nigerians that year, 83% (425 cases) resulted in outright rejections.
- Only 13% (65 applicants) were granted official refugee status.
- Subsidiary protection accounted for 2% (10 applicants), while humanitarian protection—largely derived for family integration—stood at 3% (15 applicants).
Meanwhile, legal frameworks governing Dutch immigration continue to shift. Following rulings by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Netherlands suspended its nationwide “safe country of origin” fast-track rejection list in September 2025. Simultaneously, the Dutch parliament advanced legislative measures introducing a strict two-tier status system, imposing heavier income, housing, and waiting-period thresholds for individuals seeking family reunification.
