LAGOS – A 33-year-old man, identified simply as Olu, narrowly escaped death on Tuesday after jumping into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge. The suicide attempt, reportedly triggered by devastating financial losses in cryptocurrency investments, was foiled by the swift intervention of the Nigeria Police Force and a local fisherman.
Olu, a resident of Ibadan, Oyo State, reportedly drove a silver Lexus SUV from the state capital to Lagos with the sole intention of ending his life. Upon reaching the Yaba axis of the bridge, he parked the vehicle and plunged into the waters below.
The alarm was raised by eagle-eyed commuters who witnessed the plunge. Responding to the emergency, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Yaba Division, CSP Adegbemi Isiaka, immediately mobilized a nearby fisherman to assist in the rescue operation.
”The victim was spotted mid-air, and our officers acted instantly,” a police source confirmed. “The DPO engaged a local fisherman on the water, who reached the man just as he was being swept away by the current. He was pulled into a canoe and brought to shore alive.”
Witnesses described the scene as “miraculous,” as many who take the plunge from the Third Mainland Bridge rarely survive the impact or the lagoon’s undercurrents. Following his rescue, Olu was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment and psychiatric evaluation.
Investigations revealed that the victim is the first of two children; his father resides in the United Kingdom while his mother lives in Ibadan. Distraught by the wipe-out of his savings in the volatile crypto market, Olu reportedly felt he could no longer face his family or the financial ruin.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command noted that while attempted suicide remains a criminal offense under Nigerian law, the primary focus is currently on the victim’s recovery and rehabilitation.
”His family has been contacted and they have promised to provide him with the necessary support and admit him to a rehabilitation center,” a police representative stated.
The incident has sparked fresh conversations on social media regarding mental health and the high-risk nature of digital asset trading. Business mogul Isaac Fayose, who shared a video of the rescue, urged Nigerians to “check on your family and friends,” noting that the current economic climate is taking a heavy toll on many.
Authorities have since reinforced the need for distressed individuals to seek professional counseling rather than resorting to extreme measures. The silver Lexus SUV has been recovered and moved to the Yaba Police Station for safekeeping.
