A war of words has broken out between global Afrobeats icon David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, casting a fiery shadow over the final stretch of the Osun State governorship election.
The high-stakes exchange was sparked by a scathing media interview where Sowore—the African Action Congress (AAC) flagbearer—unloaded on the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke. During the appearance on News Central TV, Sowore characterized the governor as lacking intellectual capacity, bluntly stating he had “nothing upstairs” and describing parts of Osogbo, the state capital, as resembling a “war zone” due to poor infrastructure.
The Social Media Showdown
Taking exception to the remarks, Davido—who serves as the head of youth mobilisation for his uncle’s campaign—shared a snippet of the interview on X (formerly Twitter). The award-winning singer fired back by labeling the activist an “Arindin,” a Yoruba descriptor for a foolish or unintelligent person.
Rather than back down, Sowore doubled down on his criticisms, turning the insult back on the Adeleke family. The activist slammed the governor’s historical political alliances, particularly pointing to past alignment with the ruling center.
”The real arindin is your uncle, who had to go back and obtain the equivalent of a GED after he had already served as a Nigerian Senator,” Sowore retorted online.
Accusing the influential political dynasty of treating Osun State as a “private estate” to fund an extravagant lifestyle, Sowore broadened his attack. He asserted that the ruling class exploits public office at the expense of ordinary citizens, warning that public endurance has its limits.
The bitter exchange highlights the intense political polarization and fierce rhetoric surrounding the electoral battleground in Osun State.
