London Defies Putin: Seized Russian Shadow Fleet Ships Won’t Be Released

​LONDON — The British government has struck a defiant tone in the face of escalating threats from Moscow, vowing that its crackdown on Russia’s illicit oil network will not waver. Responding directly to warnings of retaliation from Vladimir Putin over the detention of commercial vessels, London confirmed that seized ships linked to the Kremlin will remain under arrest.

​At the heart of the standoff is the Cameroon-flagged tanker SMYRTOS, which has been held by British authorities since June. Despite strong protests and threats of counter-measures from the Russian leadership—who have branded the maritime enforcement “piracy”—UK officials made it clear that the vessel will not be released.
