ABUJA — Stung by an unprecedented slump in international competitions, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially constituted a high-powered, six-member fact-finding committee to dissect the factors driving the decline of the country’s national teams.
At the core of the probe is the Super Falcons’ shocking failure to secure a ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. As ten-time continental champions and traditional powerhouses of African women’s football, the Falcons suffered a dismal campaign at the 14th Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. After crashing out at the quarter-final stage, the team compounded their woes with a 1-2 defeat to South Africa in the classification playoffs, ending an unbroken legacy that saw Nigeria feature in every single edition of the global tournament since its inception in 1991.
To halt the downward spiral, the NFF has assembled a panel comprising seasoned administrators, elite tacticians, and former national team icons tasked with investigating the immediate and remote causes of the failures, and mapping out structural solutions to reposition Nigerian football.
