Truth or Treason? ValidViewNetwork Sets August 30 for Third Global Discourse

Monthly forum moves from Nigeria’s reputation crisis to the difficult boundary between national criticism, accountability and demarketing.

Is telling the truth about Nigeria an act of patriotism, or can relentless criticism become a weapon against the country?

That question will take centre stage on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as ValidViewNetwork hosts the third edition of its Monthly Global Discourse.The two-hour discourse, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., is themed:“Truth or Treason? Navigating the Thin Line Between National Critique and National Demarketing.”

ValidViewNetwork reports that the third edition continues a monthly conversation that has increasingly placed difficult questions about Nigeria’s security, identity, reputation and future before an audience beyond the country’s immediate borders.

The August edition follows two intellectually demanding conversations that have established the Global Discourse as a platform for examining national questions beyond the noise of daily political argument.

From insecurity to Nigeria’s image

The journey began with the maiden edition, which confronted the threat posed by insecurity in Nigeria’s forests.

That conversation brought together leading voices in forestry, security and national development and produced a 15-point communique on protecting Nigeria’s forest resources and addressing the security challenges surrounding them.

The discourse then moved in July from the physical security of the Nigerian landscape to the country’s psychological and reputational landscape.

The second edition, held on Sunday, July 26, was titled “National Demarketing and the Nigerian Psyche: Resetting Nigeria’s Public Mindset.”

Among the distinguished voices at the session were Dr. Bolajoko Bayo-Ajayi, President and Chairman of Council of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria, and Dr. Ike Neliaku, President and Chairman of Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

Their interventions produced a debate that went beyond the familiar argument that Nigeria’s image is damaged by foreigners. The speakers turned the mirror inward. They examined how Nigerians themselves contribute to the country’s reputation through the language they use, the stories they amplify and the picture of the country they project to the wider world.

One of the most memorable challenges from the session was the admonition against saying “Nigeria has happened to me.”

The argument was not that Nigerians should ignore failure or abandon criticism. It was that a country cannot continuously describe itself through its failures and expect the world to see something entirely different.

Now, the question gets harder

The third edition takes that argument into more contested territory. Nigeria is a democracy. Citizens have the right to criticise government.

Journalists have the duty to expose wrongdoing. Researchers must be able to challenge policy. Civil society must be able to document abuses.

And citizens must be free to describe the realities they experience. But there is another reality.In an age of social media, a domestic narrative can become an international narrative within minutes.

A video recorded in a Nigerian neighbourhood can reach millions of people abroad. A corruption allegation can become a global headline. A security failure can shape perceptions of an entire country.

A legitimate criticism can be detached from its original context and become part of a broader narrative about Nigeria.

That is where the August discourse begins.When does criticism become demarketing?

The theme “Truth or Treason?” deliberately refuses an easy answer.It asks whether national criticism and national demarketing are always distinguishable.

It asks whether patriotism requires silence, or whether demanding better from one’s country is itself an expression of patriotism.

It asks whether Nigerians can defend the truth about their country while also understanding the consequences of how that truth is communicated.

And perhaps most importantly, it asks who gets to decide where legitimate criticism ends and national demarketing begins.

These are not academic questions. They affect investment. They affect tourism.They affect diplomacy. They affect how Nigerians are perceived abroad. They affect how Nigerians perceive themselves.

And they affect the credibility of attempts to present Nigeria to the world.

The line between patriotism and propaganda

There is an obvious danger on both sides. A government or political establishment could label legitimate criticism as “demarketing” simply because it is uncomfortable.

That would be dangerous. A democracy cannot demand praise when accountability is required. But citizens and public commentators can also fall into the opposite trap.

When every national failure becomes proof that Nigeria is uniquely hopeless, criticism can cease to be corrective and become corrosive. The August discourse intends to interrogate that uncomfortable middle ground.

The third now examines the responsibility attached to speaking about Nigeria itself.

It is a conversation about Nigeria’s territory, identity and voice. And it is precisely the kind of conversation that cannot be settled by slogans.

The first two editions brought respected voices from forestry, marketing, public relations and national development into the conversation.

The August edition will maintain that standard, bringing another set of authoritative voices to a question that sits at the intersection of democracy, communication, patriotism, reputation and national development.

The identities of the Distinguished Discussants will add another dimension to what is already shaping up as one of the most consequential conversations in the series.

The conversation continues

The ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse will hold its third edition on Sunday, August 30, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
