IBB at 85: No Military Coup Ever Succeeded Without Civilian Backing

​MINNA — As he marks his milestone 85th birthday, former military president General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has dropped a historical bombshell, declaring that no successful military coup in Nigeria’s tumultuous political history was ever executed without the active connivance, sponsorship, and backing of civilians.

​Speaking during a commemorative interview with Badeggi 90.1 FM in Minna, Niger State, the former Nigerian leader pulled back the curtain on the nexus between political elites and military adventurism, asserting that wealthy citizens have historically played instrumental roles in facilitating unconstitutional changes of government.

​”No successful coup in Nigeria’s history had occurred without civilian involvement,” Babangida stated, highlighting a systemic vulnerability that has long plagued the nation’s democratic evolution.

​The Agony of 1985 and the Fall of Vatsa

​Turning the pages back to his own administration, Babangida offered a raw, introspective account of the 1985 palace coup plot that threatened his government and culminated in the tragic trial and execution of his lifelong friend, Major General Mamman Vatsa, then serving as the minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

​The former head of state admitted that processing the allegations against Vatsa—his childhood companion dating back to their days at Bida Middle School—was one of the most devastating experiences of his military career.

​Recalling the moment intelligence first reached his desk, Babangida revealed that he personally summoned Vatsa and Mohammed Gado Nasko to his office to address the rumors. Both men flatly denied any involvement. However, a subsequent military commission of inquiry exonerated Nasko while unearthing irrefutable proof implicating Vatsa in the conspiracy.

​”There was nothing I could do to exonerate him from the consequences prescribed by military law. My hands were tied. That was how I lost my brother, General Mamman Vatsa,” Babangida recalled somberly. Vatsa was subsequently executed by firing squad in March 1986.

​Looking to Nigeria’s Future

​Shifting his lens to the contemporary socio-economic landscape, Babangida addressed the severe financial hardships and security dilemmas currently confronting ordinary Nigerians.

​Rather than dwelling solely on historical grievances, the elder statesman urged citizens to remain resilient and extend their cooperation to the administration of President Bola Tinubu. He expressed strong optimism that ongoing economic and administrative reforms will eventually steer the country toward prosperity and stability.

​Babangida governed Nigeria as military head of state from August 1985 until his historic stepping aside in August 1993, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s political trajectory.
