OSOGBO, August 14, 2026: The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, has called for urgent investigations into alleged attacks, political intimidation and firearm-related incidents in Odo Otin Local Government Area.
Egbedun made the demand on Friday, August 14, one day before Osun voters are scheduled to elect their next governor.
His intervention followed what he described as disturbing incidents reported across Odo Otin within the preceding 48 hours.

What Egbedun says happened
According to the Speaker, armed military personnel deployed to Odo Otin and allegedly led by one Sikiru Adeboye had been moving through communities and targeting members and leaders of the Accord political platform.
Egbedun said the allegations should not be dismissed as political rhetoric. He called for an independent and transparent investigation by the relevant authorities.
One of the incidents he cited allegedly occurred at the residence of Alhaja Popoola Kuburat Ijadunola, popularly known as Mama Mi Leko. Egbedun identified her as the elder sister of former Osun Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
He alleged that armed personnel invaded her residence and took away two of her children. The Speaker also alleged attacks involving Ayanyemi Joshua Olawale, known as Lawesco, Fasola Femi, known as Odofin, and Ajimoti Rasheed Omotayo, known as Action. He said gunshots were fired and Ajimoti’s dog was killed.
A timeline of the security concerns
The latest allegations form part of a wider sequence of security-related incidents surrounding the Osun election.
July 27: Egbedun condemned the alleged invasion of an INEC office at Oyinlola DC School, Ward 2, Okuku, where hoodlums were reported to have stolen Permanent Voter Cards. He described the incident as a threat to the electoral process.
Earlier this week: The Speaker says three armed men were arrested in Okuku in an incident he described as involving political activity. He alleged that the suspects confessed to working for Francis Eniade, an APC House of Representatives candidate.
The suspects’ arrest: Egbedun said the men were found with two pump-action firearms and were handed over personally to the Director of the Department of State Services for further investigation.
Subsequently: The Speaker said he was informed that the three suspects had been released.
Past 48 hours: Egbedun said fresh incidents involving armed personnel, political actors and residents were reported in Odo Otin.
August 14: The Speaker publicly appealed to the Federal Government, security agencies, human-rights organisations, election observers and the international community to monitor the situation.
August 15: Osun voters are scheduled to cast their ballots in the governorship election.
The compressed timeline is significant. It places the latest allegations within a broader period of heightened concern about electoral security rather than treating Friday’s statement as an isolated political intervention.
Speaker questions release of armed suspects
Egbedun’s strongest concern centred on the three men allegedly arrested in Okuku. He said they were arrested with two pump-action firearms and allegedly confessed to working for Francis Eniade.
Eniade is an APC candidate for the House of Representatives in the Ifelodun, Boripe and Odo Otin Federal Constituency. The Speaker also accused Eniade of previously threatening him in a video circulated on social media. He continued that the suspects were handed over to the DSS for further investigation but were subsequently released, while also stating that there had been an attempt to intimidate him from releasing a video containing the suspects’ alleged confessional statements.
The political stakes are unusually high
The Speaker’s intervention comes just hours before Osun voters head to the polls. The election has already generated significant political tension.
The political landscape has also shifted sharply since the last governorship election, with several prominent politicians changing political allegiance. Egbedun himself is among politicians who have moved away from the PDP structure as the 2026 contest intensified.
The political rivalry has been accompanied by competing allegations of intimidation, violence and attempts to manipulate the electoral process.
That makes the conduct of security agencies particularly important. A heavily armed security presence can reassure voters when deployed impartially.

The same presence can intimidate voters if citizens believe it is being used selectively. That is why the Speaker’s demand is not simply about politics. It concerns the credibility of the institutions responsible for protecting the election.
‘Democracy cannot survive where citizens are intimidated’
Egbedun urged the Federal Government, DSS, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army and other relevant authorities to investigate the allegations. He also called on the National Human Rights Commission, civil society organisations, election observers, diplomatic missions and international human-rights organisations to monitor developments.
“Democracy cannot survive where citizens are intimidated into silence.” He argued that voters must be able to participate without fear of attacks, arbitrary arrests or partisan use of security agencies.
The Speaker also urged security personnel to act professionally and impartially.
A warning that reaches beyond Saturday
Egbedun appealed particularly to the international community not to wait until violence becomes irreversible before taking an interest in Osun. He said the request was not for foreign governments or international organisations to support any political party.
Instead, he urged them to defend human rights, constitutional democracy and the rule of law. That distinction is important. International election observers are not supposed to determine who wins an election. Their role is to observe whether citizens can participate freely and whether the institutions conducting and securing the election operate according to established rules.
What remains unanswered
The Speaker’s allegations leave several questions for the authorities. Who were the armed personnel allegedly involved in the incidents?
Under whose orders were they operating? Were civilians detained?If so, on what grounds? What happened to the three men allegedly arrested with pump-action firearms? Who authorised their release? Were their alleged confessional statements recorded and preserved?
And did the security agencies investigate the allegations against the political actors named by the Speaker? These questions cannot be settled by political statements.They require evidence and official responses.

If the allegations are false, the implicated institutions and individuals should have the opportunity to establish that publicly.
If they are true, those responsible should face the law. That is the essence of the Speaker’s appeal.
Osun now faces its most important test
The ballot will ultimately determine who governs Osun. But the manner in which voters reach the ballot box will also determine how credible the result appears.
A peaceful election requires more than deploying soldiers, police officers and other security personnel. It requires citizens to believe that those officers will protect them regardless of the party they support. It requires political actors to understand that threats have consequences. It requires election officials to operate without intimidation.
And it requires security agencies to explain themselves when serious allegations emerge. The July 27 incident at Okuku already placed electoral security under scrutiny.
