Nigeria, US Deepen Security Pact in Washington

​WASHINGTON D.C. — Nigeria and the United States have reinforced their strategic military alliance, concluding a high-stakes series of bilateral defense and security negotiations in the American capital.

​The diplomatic push centered around the second meeting of the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group (JWG), convened from August 12 to 13, 2026. Co-chaired by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, the talks directly addressed security architecture, institutional accountability, and regional counter-terrorism frameworks following Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).

​High-Level Military Engagements at the Pentagon

​As part of the broader diplomatic mission, Minister of Defence General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) led a formidable military and economic delegation to the Pentagon for specialized defense talks.

​The delegation engaged with senior U.S. defense officials led by Julia Sokol, Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs. Discussions focused heavily on operational synergies, intelligence-sharing capabilities, and bolstering joint structures to combat West African insurgency networks.

​Reviewing Progress on Priority Frameworks

​The JWG plenary sessions evaluated actionable milestones achieved since the inaugural meeting held in Abuja in January 2026. Central topics included safeguarding vulnerable communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, strengthening judicial and law enforcement institutions, and expanding counter-terrorism financing mechanisms.

​Washington acknowledged Nigeria’s recent security strides, which feature the prosecution of hundreds of suspects tied to Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa (ISIS-WA), alongside the recruitment and training of 50,000 additional police personnel. Both delegations stressed the ongoing necessity of cooperative biometric information sharing and targeted humanitarian support for internally displaced persons (IDPs) returning to their ancestral homes.

​Both nations closed the Washington mission with a renewed pledge to maintain open diplomatic channels, mutual respect, and a unified front against transnational security threats.
