ABUJA – The House of Representatives has been plunged into mourning following the death of Honorable Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, a veteran legislator and one of Nigeria’s most distinguished legal minds.
Rep. Hassan, who represented the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State, passed away Friday evening in Abuja after a brief illness. He was 66.
A member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Hassan was elected to the 10th Assembly in 2023. At the time of his passing, he served as the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, a role that leveraged his extensive background in legislative drafting and constitutional law.
A Legacy in Law
Before transitioning into partisan politics, Rep. Hassan was a pillar of the National Assembly’s administrative architecture. He rose through the ranks of the bureaucracy, eventually retiring as a Permanent Secretary. His colleagues often described him as an “institutional library,” noting that many of the nation’s current laws bear his technical imprint from his decades as a legislative counsel.
In a statement released Saturday, House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi described the late lawmaker as a “committed, reflective, and diligent” representative whose interventions in plenary were marked by professional maturity and a deep sense of public duty.
”Nigeria has lost one of its foremost legal draftsmen,” the statement read. “His wealth of institutional memory significantly enriched our parliamentary work and national discourse.”
Leadership Mourns
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, expressed profound sorrow over the loss, extending his condolences to the Hassan family and the government of Kano State. Speaker Abbas noted that Hassan’s dedication to the rule of law and the justice system left a vacuum that would be difficult to fill.
Beyond his leadership in the Judiciary Committee, Hassan was an active member of several high-profile panels, including the Committees on Constitution Review, Aviation, and Public Petitions.
Final Rites
In accordance with Islamic traditions, the remains of the late lawmaker are scheduled for burial today, Saturday, April 11, 2026, in Abuja.
He is survived by his family and remains a celebrated figure in Kano politics, remembered for his transition from a top-tier civil servant to a grassroots political leader under the NNPP banner.
