BADAGRY — Anxiety has gripped the ancient coastal town of Badagry following the mysterious disappearance of a young resident, Martins Aluko, who was reportedly swept into a river while returning from the Benin Republic on an illicit rice-transporting boat.
The incident, which has sparked local outrage and suspicion, occurred on Wednesday as Aluko and a colleague navigated back across the border waterways. While the boat and its cargo of foreign rice successfully arrived in Badagry on Thursday morning, Aluko did not return with them.
Local sources disclosed that the survivor’s failure to provide a coherent or immediate account of how Aluko went overboard has fueled intense speculation. Community members have raised red flags over the circumstances, with unverified claims circulating that a physical altercation may have preceded the drowning, allegedly because Aluko could not swim.
The lack of clarity nearly boiled over into a violent confrontation on Thursday morning as restive youths clashed verbally with local boat operators. The brewing unrest prompted swift intervention from the Nigeria Police Force. The Divisional Police Officer personally led a team to the flashpoint area, deploying tactical measures that successfully restored calm and prevented a full-scale breakdown of law and order.
