Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, was honored with honorary citizenship of the State of Georgia during the 2025 Black Congressional Week in Washington, DC. The recognition underscores his contributions to leadership dialogue and advocacy for Africa’s development.
On Thursday, September 25, 2025, Peter Obi took part in a series of significant events during Black Congressional Week, with a special focus on engagements related to Georgia State. The day’s activities began with the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception held at the U.S. Senate Kennedy Caucus Room, hosted by Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock. Senator Warnock praised efforts to deepen discussions on African democracy and economic growth, inviting Obi to share key insights.

Obi also met Kim Clark, CEO of Georgia Power, the largest independent power company in the state that produces and distributes more than 20,000 megawatts of electricity nationwide. Their conversation centered on innovations in energy development, with Obi reflecting on potential lessons for Nigeria’s energy sector challenges.

Later, at the One Voice Africa event, Obi emphasized the need for visionary and responsible leadership to unlock Africa’s vast potential, urging participants to champion good governance across the continent.
The day culminated with the ceremonial conferment of honorary citizenship by the State of Georgia, an honor Obi described as both humbling and motivating. He reflected on the experience as a moment dedicated to learning, serving, and reaffirmed his commitment to building a new Nigeria grounded in visionary leadership.
