Pastor William Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, has announced important revisions to the church’s longstanding marriage regulations, clarifying that these rules are administrative guidelines rather than biblical mandates. The declaration was made during the 2025 Global Family and Marriage Conference.
Ban on Visits Lifted
One of the most notable changes is the official cancellation of the rule that prohibited women from visiting the homes of men they intend to marry. Pastor Kumuyi explained that such visits are now permissible during courtship, provided the couple is accompanied by a church elder as a chaperone. This reform allows greater freedom for intending couples to interact under proper oversight.
Six-month Courtship No Longer Mandatory
Another major modification concerns the church’s formerly required six-month courtship period before marriage. Pastor Kumuyi explained that this timeframe, while introduced for practical reasons to allow couples adequate time to know each other, is not a biblical command. He emphasized it remains optional rather than compulsory, saying, “Six months is all right, but it’s not something inflexible. Changing it to three months does not change the Bible because six months is not in the Bible.”
Distinguishing Church Principles from God’s Law
Pastor Kumuyi called on church members to mature in their understanding and to differentiate between divine commandments and human-made church regulations. He cautioned against treating church administrative practices as scriptural laws and encouraged believers to align strictly with biblical teachings. “As a Christian, you need to become so mature that you know the difference between the law of God and the principles in the church,” he said.
Role of Marriage Committees
Addressing the role of marriage committees in the church, Kumuyi clarified that these bodies were established to offer guidance and assistance—not to replace biblical authority. He reminded leaders that marriage committees should not exercise power beyond what is prescribed in scripture, reinforcing that their function is church administration rather than divine governance.
Mixed Reactions from Members and Public
The announcement has triggered a range of responses within the Deeper Life Ministry community and broader Nigerian society. Some members expressed cautious approval of the flexibility these changes bring, appreciating the opportunity for more open courtship experiences. Others voiced concern over potential risks related to loosening strictures on visits and courtship duration.
Esther Komolafe, a church member, remarked, “I still think six months was a good idea. It gave people time to slow down, especially since dating isn’t allowed in Deeper Life. At least you get to really talk and know each other a bit before marriage.” Conversely, Emmanuel Odey welcomed the reforms as necessary corrections to traditions mistaken for biblical doctrines.
Online commentary reflects diverse perspectives, from fears that the changes may encourage moral laxity to support for liberation from rigid rules.
Pastor Kumuyi’s Vision for Reformed Church Practices
These reforms are part of Pastor Kumuyi’s ongoing efforts to review and amend church practices that were introduced for administrative order rather than explicit biblical instruction. His leadership signals a shift towards prioritizing scripture over tradition in matters of courtship and marriage within the Deeper Christian Life Ministry.
This decision highlights a significant moment for the church, emphasizing the need for Christians to exercise discernment and uphold true biblical principles while understanding the context of church guidelines.
