Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria today officially handed over the chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to his Sierra Leonean counterpart, President Julius Maada Bio, at the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja. The transition marks the end of President Tinubu’s tenure at the helm of the regional bloc, a period characterized by significant diplomatic efforts and strategic interventions across West Africa.
The formal handover ceremony, witnessed by leaders and delegates from ECOWAS member states, saw President Tinubu extend his best wishes to President Bio, expressing confidence in his ability to steer the organization towards greater integration, peace, and prosperity. President Tinubu, who assumed the ECOWAS chairmanship in July 2023, reflected on the challenges and achievements of his leadership, notably highlighting efforts to address political instability in the sub-region and foster economic cooperation.

President Julius Maada Bio, in his acceptance speech, lauded President Tinubu’s stewardship and pledged to build upon the foundations laid during his predecessor’s tenure. He emphasized his commitment to tackling pressing issues facing the region, including insecurity, economic development, and democratic consolidation. “I accept this immense responsibility with humility and a deep sense of purpose,” President Bio stated, adding, “My administration will work tirelessly with all member states to advance the noble objectives of ECOWAS.”
The 67th Ordinary Session is expected to deliberate on critical issues impacting the West African region, including the political transitions in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, the fight against terrorism, and strategies for sustainable economic growth. The transfer of leadership to President Bio signals a new phase for ECOWAS as it continues to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape. Observers will be keenly watching how President Bio’s leadership will influence the bloc’s approach to regional challenges and its pursuit of a more integrated and stable West Africa.
For President Tinubu, the handover allows him to redouble his focus on domestic governance, though Nigeria, as a regional powerhouse, will undoubtedly continue to play a pivotal role in ECOWAS affairs. The shift in leadership underscores the rotational nature of the ECOWAS chairmanship, a mechanism designed to ensure shared responsibility and diverse perspectives in regional governance.
