ABUJA – Retired Major General Danjuma Ali-Keffi has ignited a firestorm of controversy with explosive allegations that his successful counter-terrorism operation, which apprehended key Boko Haram leaders and financiers, was met with retaliation, including forced retirement, arrest, and prolonged detention. In a letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the retired general claims that powerful individuals within and outside the government actively undermined his efforts, pointing to a deeply entrenched system that may be profiting from the ongoing insurgency.
Ali-Keffi, who commanded the Nigerian Army’s 1 Division and led “Operation Service Wide,” a presidential task force focused on tracing terror financing, asserts that his team’s investigation revealed a network of financiers encompassing senior government officials, military officers, and prominent financial institutions. “The moment we arrested some of these individuals and started exposing the financial pipelines of terror, the backlash began,” he wrote in his letter.
Further fueling the controversy, Ali-Keffi raised concerns about the 2021 plane crash that claimed the life of Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, the then Chief of Army Staff. He suggested that Attahiru’s determination to pursue terror financiers, and his endorsement of Operation Service Wide, may have played a role in his untimely death. Ali-Keffi called for a transparent investigation into the crash, hinting at possible foul play.
Online searches reveal that similar accusations of internal sabotage have surfaced in the past, though rarely with such directness from a figure of Ali-Keffi’s stature. Previous reports, and discussions in various security analysis forums, have pointed towards the complexity of the conflict, and how certain elements within the system might be benefiting from the chaos.

The General’s claims have prompted widespread calls for an independent inquiry. Civil society organizations and security analysts are demanding accountability and transparency, emphasizing the need to address the alleged corruption and internal sabotage that could be hindering the fight against terrorism.
“These allegations are deeply concerning and must be investigated thoroughly,” stated a representative from a prominent human rights organization. “The public deserves to know the truth about who is benefiting from the insurgency and why those attempting to expose them are being silenced.”
The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official response to Ali-Keffi’s allegations. However, the implications of his claims are significant, potentially revealing a systemic issue of corruption and internal sabotage within the security apparatus.
The public is now waiting for President Tinubu to take decisive action, with many calling for a full-scale investigation into Ali-Keffi’s claims and the circumstances surrounding Lt. Gen. Attahiru’s death.
Failure to address these allegations could further erode public trust and undermine the nation’s efforts to combat terrorism.
The retired general’s whistleblowing has thrust the issue of internal sabotage into the national spotlight, raising critical questions about the integrity of the fight against Boko Haram and the commitment of those in power to end the insurgency.
The nation awaits answers, demanding transparency and accountability in the face of these grave allegations.
