WASHINGTON — Workers in the nation’s capital have scrubbed President Donald Trump’s name from the facade of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The high-profile removal followed a decisive federal court ruling that declared the landmark’s controversial renaming unlawful, concluding a bitter standoff over the branding of official Washington spaces.
By Saturday afternoon, the physical transformation of the building’s exterior was well underway. In a formal court filing, Kennedy Center Executive Director Matt Floca confirmed that the institution had complied with the judicial mandate, having “removed all physical signage on the Kennedy Center building and grounds” bearing the president’s name.
The physical removal process itself drew significant attention. On Friday evening, crowds gathered along the Potomac to watch crews erect scaffolding. Despite delays caused by severe regional thunderstorms, the work proceeded into the early hours of Saturday behind a massive white tarp. By morning, the sound of heavy tools echoed from behind the fabric as local joggers and tourists paused to witness the sudden reversal of the venue’s branding.
