TORONTO — The opening match of Canada’s Group B campaign at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ wasn’t just a historic moment for the host nation; it marked the realization of an extraordinary dream for Abuja-born striker Tani Oluwaseyi.
When Canada took the pitch at BMO Field against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the 26-year-old Villarreal forward was named in coach Jesse Marsch’s starting eleven, cementing a rapid, late-blooming ascent from grassroots North American soccer to the absolute pinnacle of global football.
A Tale of Two Strikers
The heavy Nigerian influence on the Canadian team sheet was impossible to miss. While Oluwaseyi spearheaded the frontline, fellow Nigerian-Canadian Promise David (24) began the match from the bench before making a crucial impact. In a dramatic second half, it was Union SG striker David who provided the vital assist for Cyle Larin’s 77th-minute equalizer, rescuing a 1–1 draw and securing Canada’s first-ever point in a World Cup final tournament.

From the Federal Capital Territory to La Liga
Oluwaseyi’s journey began in the neighborhoods of Abuja, Nigeria. At age 10, his family migrated to Mississauga, Ontario, where his footballing foundations were re-established. Unlike many modern stars fast-tracked through elite European academies from infancy, the 6’2″ powerhouse took a distinctively academic route:
- College Prominence: He starred for St. John’s University Red Storm from 2018 to 2021, capturing the 2019 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors.
- The MLS Launchpad: Selected 17th overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by Minnesota United, he truly burst into the consciousness of international scouts during a prolific loan spell at USL side San Antonio FC, where he shattered the club’s single-season scoring record with 17 goals.
- The Spanish Dream: By the summer of 2025, his explosive physical profile and efficiency in front of goal earned him a marquee transfer to Spanish La Liga side Villarreal CF, signing a long-term contract running through 2030.
Choosing the Maple Leaf
Holding dual eligibility, Oluwaseyi’s international career moved just as quickly as his club progression. First called up by Jesse Marsch in June 2024 for high-profile friendlies against France and the Netherlands, he has seamlessly integrated into a dynamic, multicultural Les Rouges squad.

Similarly, his international teammate Promise David completed a formal switch of allegiance after previously representing Nigeria at the U23 level in 2022. David’s recovery from a severe hip injury earlier this year capped off a triumphant dual narrative for the diaspora talent.
As Canada prepares for its upcoming Group B encounters against Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver, the football world will be watching closely. For Tani Oluwaseyi, years of relentless persistence across college pitches and lower leagues have finally paid off on the grandest stage of them all.
