United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a stark plea Thursday for an immediate end to the protracted Middle East conflict, as civilian suffering reaches new heights and the war’s shockwaves threaten global stability.
In a pointed message directed at key players, Guterres called on the United States and Israel to “end the war” without delay. “Human suffering deepens, civilian casualties mount, and the global economic impact is increasingly devastating,” he stated, underscoring the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen. Recent UN data reveals over 45,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza alone since October 2023, with more than 1.9 million displaced, according to the latest OCHA reports. Israeli strikes have intensified in southern Lebanon amid clashes with Hezbollah, displacing over 90,000 more, while Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping have disrupted 15% of global trade.
Guterres reserved equally firm words for Iran, urging it to “stop attacking their neighbours that are not parties to the conflict.” Tehran-backed groups have escalated assaults, including over 200 Houthi drone and missile strikes on Saudi Arabia and UAE targets since January 2026, per Reuters analysis. Direct Iranian missile barrages on Israeli positions last month marked a dangerous escalation, drawing US naval responses in the Arabian Sea. “These proxy actions risk a wider regional inferno,” Guterres warned, echoing concerns from a March 20 UN Security Council session where Russia and China blocked a US-drafted resolution for de-escalation.
The economic toll amplifies the urgency. Oil prices have surged 25% year-to-date to $95 per barrel, fueling inflation worldwide—Nigeria’s fuel costs jumped 18% last week alone, hitting Lagos commuters hard. Wheat shipments through the Suez Canal are down 40%, exacerbating food insecurity in Africa and Asia, World Bank figures show. “This is not just a regional crisis; it’s a global one strangling recovery efforts,” Guterres added.

Diplomatic channels remain fraught. US envoy Thomas Barrack met Israeli PM Netanyahu in Jerusalem yesterday, but no breakthroughs emerged. Iran dismissed the UN message as “one-sided,” state media IRIB reported, vowing to defend its “axis of resistance.” Analysts from the International Crisis Group warn that without a ceasefire framework—potentially via Qatar-mediated talks—conflict could spill into Syria and Iraq by summer.
Guterres concluded with a call for restraint: “Leaders must choose peace over escalation. The world cannot afford more graves or empty shelves.”
