Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, the Global Senior Pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), has issued a detailed apology and clarification following widespread controversy over his recent remarks about the late Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola, the revered first General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC).
In a sermon that stirred significant debate, Fatoyinbo described Apostle Babalola as “anointed… so anointed” but controversially added that “all the grace just went like that” because Babalola “had no money.” He also questioned the whereabouts of Babalola’s children, a comment many considered insensitive.
The CAC swiftly responded with a strong public statement condemning Fatoyinbo’s remarks as “misleading” and “biblically flawed,” emphasizing that equating spiritual anointing or ministerial success with material wealth is contrary to biblical teachings. The church highlighted Babalola’s distinguished life, including the fact that he lived in a befitting home, owned one of the finest Ford Jeeps of his time, and was honored by figures such as Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Nigeria in 1956. CAC also reaffirmed that Babalola’s children are living fulfilled, faithful lives serving God quietly without ostentation.
Pastor Fatoyinbo, deeply moved by the backlash, released a press statement expressing gratitude for the correction and clarifying that no disrespect was intended toward Apostle Babalola, his family, or the CAC. He acknowledged Apostle Babalola as a “most distinguished father of faith” whose exploits continue to influence Christian churches in Nigeria and beyond. Fatoyinbo stated he grew up in the church and treasures its heritage profoundly. He denied ever speaking ill of Babalola’s children and apologized if his words caused any distress or misunderstanding.
Fatoyinbo’s apology underscores his respect for the legacy and ministry of Apostle Babalola, recognizing him as a hallmark of faith and a spiritual father to many. He prayed for the continued growth of CAC and the enduring impact of Apostle Babalola’s ministry worldwide.
The controversy has sparked broader conversations about the relationship between spiritual success and material wealth in Nigerian Christianity, with many urging a return to biblical values that separate faith from financial status.
Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola is celebrated as a transformative figure in Nigerian Christian history, renowned for his miraculous healings, revival leadership, and foundational role in establishing the Christ Apostolic Church. His ministry was marked by profound faith, holiness, and commitment to spiritual renewal—values still cherished today.
This episode serves as a reminder of the deep respect held for Apostle Babalola’s legacy and the sensitive nature of honoring spiritual leaders whose impact transcends generations.
