Bank Boss Warns SA: Immigration Crackdown Threatens Growth

​Standard Bank Group CEO Sim Tshabalala has issued a stark warning to policymakers, cautioning that severe restrictions on migration could deal a severe blow to South Africa’s fragile economy.

​Speaking at the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation Winter Seminar in Johannesburg, Tshabalala pushed back against widespread political rhetoric framing foreign nationals purely as a burden. Instead, he presented data indicating that migrants act as vital economic drivers—serving as consumers, taxpayers, entrepreneurs, and a critical source of labor that helps expand market demand rather than simply displacing local workers.

​To underscore the risks of turning inward, Tshabalala pointed to the United Kingdom’s Brexit experience as a cautionary tale. He noted that Brexit—driven heavily by a desire to curb immigration—has been estimated to reduce the UK’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by up to 8%, lower investment significantly, and suppress employment. South Africa, he warned, should treat Britain’s post-EU path as a warning rather than an economic blueprint.

​The intervention highlights growing anxiety among corporate leaders over anti-immigrant sentiment and hostile policy shifts. Tshabalala cautioned that social hostility and heavy-handed migration restrictions not only dampen consumer and business confidence but also elevate country risk perceptions. In practical financial terms, he warned, rising xenophobia translates directly into higher interest rates, reduced capital investment, and fewer jobs for all South Africans.
