A Sharia Court in Hausawa, Kano, has remanded Ahmad Sabiu Shekar Gabas after he pleaded guilty to allegations of conspiracy, vandalism and theft involving streetlights installed in Sallare community.
The court, presided over by Dr Bello Musa Khalid, ordered that Sabiu remain in a correctional facility until October 14, 2026, when the matter is scheduled for sentencing.
Sabiu was charged alongside Mustapha Isola, who is currently at large. The prosecution, led by Barrister Musa Magaji, told the court that the two men allegedly entered Sallare and began removing streetlights installed in the community.
Vigilantes reportedly caught them and handed them over to the police.
GUILTY PLEA
The legal status of this case differs from an ordinary allegation because Sabiu reportedly pleaded guilty after the charges were read to him. The judge admitted his confession as evidence and ordered his remand pending sentencing.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the guilty plea is significant because sentencing is now the next major procedural stage for Sabiu, while the second accused remains at large.
The case also draws attention to a growing problem in many Nigerian communities: the theft and destruction of public infrastructure.
Streetlights are not simply decorative assets. They are intended to improve visibility at night and can contribute to road safety and community security.
Public infrastructure at riskWhen streetlights are removed or vandalised, the cost is ultimately borne by the community or government agency responsible for replacing them.
In areas already struggling with insecurity, the loss of lighting can also create dark spaces that affect residents’ sense of safety.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the case therefore extends beyond the alleged theft of electrical equipment. It raises questions about the protection of public infrastructure and the market for stolen components.
The court is expected to determine the appropriate sentence on October 14.Any prosecution of the second suspect, if arrested, would remain a separate judicial process.
The wider lesson is straightforward: public infrastructure belongs to the community, and vandalising or stealing it imposes costs far beyond the value of the materials removed.
