As political activities intensify ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has called on traditional rulers across the country to deploy their moral authority to checkmate political violence, hostility, and mudslinging.
Prof. Amupitan made the appeal in Minna, Niger State, during the turbaning ceremony of INEC’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, who was conferred with the prestigious traditional title of Gimbiyan Raya Kasan Minna by the Emir of Minna, Dr. Umar Faruq Bahago.
Highlighting the sanctity of the electoral process, the INEC chief stressed that voting is a constitutional right rather than a privilege. He urged political actors to pivot away from toxic rhetoric and focus strictly on issue-driven campaigns that will not destabilize public peace.
”We appeal to our royal fathers to help us counsel politicians to conduct their campaigns peacefully and avoid campaigns of calumny,” Amupitan stated. “Campaigns should be based on issues and not heat up the system or breach law and order”. He further commended the Minna Emirate for its progressive stance on recognizing and elevating women into prominent leadership positions.
In her response, the newly turbaned traditional titleholder expressed profound gratitude to the Emir, describing the honour as a renewed call to service dedicated to driving community development, championing youth empowerment, and advancing gender equality. She also charged parents nationwide to afford equal opportunities to all children regardless of gender, noting that every child possesses the potential to bring pride and national progress.
