Tragedy struck along interstate transit routes as suspected bandits ambushed a chartered vehicle, killing the driver and abducting 18 students hailing from Oyo State.
The victims, enrolled at the Gamji College of Health Technology in Sokoto State, were headed home to the Oke-Ogun region—specifically Igboho—for a break when the onslaught occurred over the past 48 hours.
According to community sources, the heavily armed assailants intercepted the school-arranged bus mid-journey, instantly executing the driver before forcing the captive students into the surrounding forests. The driver’s remains have since been recovered and buried.
An Oke-Ogun youth leader, speaking anonymously, clarified that the targeted vehicle did not belong to Usmanu Danfodiyo University students, as initially speculated, but exclusively conveyed health technology students. Credible accounts indicate the outlaws subsequently forced their captives toward the Mokwa axis.
This violent ambush compounds mounting panic over passenger safety across major Nigerian corridors, trailing closely behind a separate catastrophe involving prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps.
As of press time, official comments from the Oyo State Police Command remain pending, with lines to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, unanswered. Local communities and families are appealing for urgent security intervention to secure the safe release of the students.
