The Lagos State Government is urging residents to embrace health insurance as part of efforts to reduce out-of-pocket medical spending and ease growing pressure on public hospitals.
The push comes amid increasing concerns over congestion, long queues and pressure on medical personnel in the state’s government-owned facilities.
Recent reporting has highlighted growing patient numbers and shortages of healthcare workers in Lagos public hospitals, with the state’s Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, attributing some of the pressure to rising healthcare demand and the migration of medical professionals.
INSURANCE AS A FINANCING TOOL
The argument behind the government’s position is straightforward. When patients pay the full cost of medical treatment directly from their pockets, illness can quickly become a financial crisis.
Health insurance spreads that risk across a larger pool and can make access to healthcare more predictable.
Lagos operates the Ilera Eko health insurance programme, while other social protection mechanisms are available for vulnerable residents.
The state government has also said that indigent patients can access social health protection support in public hospitals.
ValidViewNetwork reports that expanding insurance coverage could help reduce the financial burden on households while giving hospitals a more predictable source of healthcare financing.
But insurance alone is not enoughInsurance cannot by itself solve hospital congestion. If hospitals lack enough doctors, nurses, beds, equipment and medicines, increasing the number of insured patients could also increase demand on already stretched facilities.
That makes the state’s healthcare strategy a broader question of financing, staffing and infrastructure.
A newspaper report recently submitted about long queues in some Lagos public hospitals and concerns over healthcare worker shortages.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the success of the insurance push will therefore depend on whether residents can obtain affordable coverage and whether hospitals have enough capacity to provide quality treatment.
For residents, insurance can offer financial protection. For government, it must be accompanied by investment in facilities and personnel.
The ultimate measure of the policy should be whether Lagos residents can obtain timely, affordable and quality healthcare when they need it.
