The aircraft crash reported earlier in Igbokoda, Ondo State, has now been confirmed as an accident involving a Nigerian Air Force aircraft carrying 32 people, comprising 25 passengers and seven crew members.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, confirmed the development on Monday, saying the aircraft disappeared from radar after air traffic controllers lost radio contact with it at about 9:13 a.m.

The wreckage was subsequently located close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda, in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The development significantly updates the first report published by ValidViewNetwork earlier on Monday, when authorities were still trying to establish the identity of the aircraft, the number of people aboard and whether there were casualties.

NAF CONFIRMS AIRCRAFT AND LAUNCHES RESCUE OPERATION

The Nigerian Air Force subsequently confirmed that the aircraft belonged to the force and identified it as an ATR-42.

According to the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred. The Air Force said it immediately activated a search and rescue operation in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies.

The NAF has not yet released the identities of the people on board or confirmed whether there were fatalities.

That distinction remains important because earlier reports from Igbokoda had described the situation as a crash with several people feared dead, before the identity and passenger manifest became known.

KEYAMO CONFIRMS 25 PASSENGERS, SEVEN CREW

Keyamo said preliminary information indicated that 25 passengers and seven crew members were aboard the aircraft. He explained that the regulation and control of military aircraft do not fall under the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development or the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority.

The minister, however, said he had spoken with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and assured the military of the ministry’s cooperation and assistance as the search and rescue operation continues.

The aircraft was reportedly travelling from Benin towards Lagos when communication with air traffic controllers was lost.Authorities were subsequently informed that the aircraft had crashed in the Igbokoda area and that the wreckage had been located near the naval facility.

WHAT IS KNOWN, AND WHAT REMAINS UNKNOWN

At this stage, several important questions remain unanswered.

Authorities have confirmed the aircraft, its operator, its route and the number of people aboard. However, the condition of the 32 people has not been officially established.

The cause of the crash is also unknown. It is equally too early to draw conclusions about what caused the aircraft to lose communication or come down in Igbokoda.

The immediate focus remains the search and rescue operation and the safe recovery of anyone who may have survived the crash.

The earlier confusion surrounding the incident also illustrates the difficulty of reporting breaking aviation accidents in their first moments, particularly when an aircraft goes down in a riverine or difficult-to-access location.

ValidViewNetwork had earlier reported the crash when initial information from Igbokoda indicated that a helicopter had gone down in the area and several people were feared dead.

At that stage, the identity of the aircraft, the number of occupants and the casualty figure could not be independently established.

The subsequent confirmation from the Federal Government and the Nigerian Air Force has now provided the first substantial details about the aircraft and those aboard.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the situation remains a developing emergency, with search and rescue operations ongoing and authorities expected to release further information as the operation progresses.

Until the NAF or other competent authorities establish the fate of the 32 people aboard, reports of confirmed deaths should be treated with caution. The priority at this stage is the search for survivors, proper identification of everyone on board and a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
