Nollywood actor Hanks Anuku has urged Nigerians to give President Bola Tinubu more time to address the country’s problems, arguing that many of the challenges confronting the nation existed before the current administration.
Anuku made the comments during an appearance on the Honest Bunch podcast, where he defended the President against criticism over the country’s economic difficulties.
He said Nigerians were “too much in a hurry” and argued that previous administrations should also be held responsible for problems inherited by Tinubu.
The actor also said he believed Tinubu was doing well and urged Nigerians to be patient with the administration.
“THE COUNTRY WAS NOT SPOILT BY HIM”
Anuku’s argument is essentially that the current administration should not be judged as though it created every problem Nigeria faces. That is a familiar political argument in Nigeria, where successive governments have blamed previous administrations for economic and institutional weaknesses.
Anuku said: “The country was not spoilt by him, there were people before him.” He argued that Nigerians should allow Tinubu to complete his tenure rather than assume that a successor would necessarily perform better.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Anuku’s position is a personal political opinion, not an independent assessment of the government’s performance.
A DIVIDED PUBLIC DEBATE
The actor’s remarks have already generated reactions online, with some Nigerians agreeing that structural problems predate Tinubu, while others argue that the current administration must be held responsible for policies introduced since 2023.
That distinction is important.
A government can inherit serious problems and still be responsible for the decisions it makes after taking office.
Similarly, criticism of a government does not necessarily mean that every problem began under that government. The more useful question is therefore whether policies are producing measurable improvements.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the Tinubu administration’s supporters point to economic reforms and government interventions, while critics focus on the cost of living and pressure on households.
The political debate will become even more intense as the 2027 election approaches.
Ultimately, Nigerians will judge the administration through their experience of prices, jobs, security, public services and economic opportunity, rather than celebrity endorsements alone.
