The search for survivors and victims of Saturday’s boat disaster on the River Benue has entered another critical phase after five bodies were recovered, while six people remain missing.
The wooden boat capsized at about 11am at the Buruku crossing point in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State while carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony.
Witnesses said more than 120 passengers were rescued after the incident, but 11 people were initially believed to be missing.
As rescuers continued their work, five bodies were recovered, leaving six people still unaccounted for.
The Public Relations Officer of the Tombo Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Saai Oryina, confirmed the recovery and said the victims identified so far were from the Mbayion area of Gboko Local Government Area.
SEARCH OPERATION CONTINUES
The changing casualty figure has complicated the early assessment of the tragedy.
According to Oryina, rescuers initially believed that seven people were missing before establishing that the number was 11. Five have now been recovered dead, while efforts continue to locate the remaining six.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the scale of the incident also highlights the importance of accurate passenger records in inland water transport. When passenger numbers are not properly documented before departure, establishing the number of missing people after an accident becomes more difficult.
LIFE JACKETS UNDER SCRUTINY
Oryina attributed some of the dangers surrounding water transportation to passengers’ failure to use life jackets. He said passengers often underestimate the risks associated with boat travel despite the possibility of sudden accidents.
The Buruku incident again raises questions about safety enforcement along Nigeria’s inland waterways, particularly at crossings used routinely by communities.
The fact that more than 120 people survived the accident also demonstrates the importance of rapid rescue operations and basic safety equipment.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the immediate priority remains locating the six missing people and recovering any remaining victims. The longer-term issue, however, is whether stronger enforcement of passenger limits, life-jacket use, boat worthiness and passenger registration can prevent another tragedy on the River Benue.
