The Kano State Police Command has arrested five people over the alleged destruction of billboards and posters belonging to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other politicians in the state.

The arrests place political campaign materials at the centre of another emerging security issue in Kano, where political competition has intensified ahead of the 2027 elections.
The police said the suspects were arrested over allegations that they deliberately destroyed posters and billboards belonging to political figures.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the police have not established the guilt of the suspects merely by arresting them. Their cases remain subject to investigation and, where charges are filed, judicial proceedings.
POLITICAL SYMBOLISM
Political posters and billboards have long served as visible symbols of party organisation and candidate support in Nigerian cities.Their destruction can therefore go beyond ordinary vandalism, particularly when the materials belong to rival political actors.
However, the motive of the suspects and whether the incidents were politically coordinated must be established through investigation.
The police have a responsibility to determine whether the alleged vandalism was spontaneous criminal damage, politically motivated activity or part of a broader attempt to provoke confrontation.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the identities of the five suspects and the precise charges they may face will be important to the next stage of the case. The incident also comes as parties and politicians increasingly position themselves for the 2027 political contest.
Kano remains politically significant because of its large electorate and the intensity of competition among major parties.
Due process crucialPolitical disagreements can generate heated reactions, but the destruction of another person’s property remains a matter for lawful investigation. At the same time, arrests must not be treated as convictions. The suspects should be investigated and, if sufficient evidence exists, prosecuted according to law.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the wider political environment makes restraint particularly important, because vandalism, provocation and retaliatory politics can quickly move from damaged posters to confrontation between supporters.
The protection of political expression and property rights should apply equally to supporters of every party, regardless of the politician whose poster is involved.
