IRKUTSK, Russia — The White House is closely monitoring a suspected pneumonic plague outbreak in Siberia following the death of a 28-year-old laboratory technician.
Darya Shipilova passed away on October 2 after being placed on a ventilator at a hospital in Shelekhov, near Irkutsk. According to independent local reports, Shipilova was working at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute when she accidentally broke a test tube containing live Yersinia pestis bacteria.
An official from the Trump administration confirmed to Axios that Washington is “aware, monitoring the outbreak, and assessing options”.
The incident has triggered severe local panic and rapid containment measures. Nearly 200 individuals who came into contact with Shipilova have been placed under strict medical observation or hospital quarantine. Regional medical facilities have implemented mask mandates, and health officials in hazmat gear have been deployed across the area.

While Russian public health agency Rospotrebnadzor officially categorized the death as “pneumonia of unknown etiology” and insisted the local epidemiological situation remains stable, prominent domestic epidemiologists and regional leaders have openly expressed skepticism over the official narrative, fueling accusations of a government cover-up.
Pneumonic plague—the most virulent form of the bacterial disease—attacks the lungs and can spread directly between humans via airborne droplets. Though entirely treatable with antibiotics if caught within the first 24 hours, the infection is almost universally fatal if left unaddressed. Local pharmacies in the Irkutsk region have reportedly experienced rushes as terrified residents attempt to stockpile medical supplies.
