The Anambra State Government has urged voters to reject Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, accusing the former governor of destroying the political structure of the All Progressives Grand Alliance during his years in office.
The claim adds another layer to the increasingly bitter political relationship between Obi and the political establishment in his home state.
Obi governed Anambra on the APGA platform before later moving to the Peoples Democratic Party and subsequently becoming the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023.
He is now the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, according to the material supplied for this report. The latest attack comes against a broader backdrop of tensions between Obi and Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
A BATTLE OVER POLITICAL LEGACY
The argument over Obi’s relationship with APGA is not new. Critics have previously accused him of failing to build the party’s structure during his time as governor, while his supporters point to his electoral record and development projects as evidence of his political legacy.
A 2014 assessment in The Nation, for example, argued that Obi had performed creditably as governor but also criticised his inability to expand APGA’s reach or strengthen its organisational structure.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the latest accusation should therefore be understood as part of a much older political argument rather than an independently established fact.
OBI AND SOLUDO
The political relationship between Obi and Soludo has deteriorated significantly in recent years. Both men have publicly described their personal relationship as cordial at various times, including references to family connections, but their political disagreements have become increasingly pronounced.
Recent reporting has documented Soludo’s support for Tinubu and the widening political distance between the governor and his predecessor.
The 2027 election has intensified the conflict because Obi’s national ambitions intersect directly with Anambra’s political identity.
APGA remains a major force in the state, while the current state administration has developed closer political relations with Tinubu.
VOTERS WILL DECIDE
The Anambra Government’s appeal is ultimately political.Whether Obi “destroyed” APGA is a matter of political interpretation and historical assessment, not a judicial finding.
ValidViewNetwork reports that voters, rather than political actors, will ultimately determine how Obi’s record and current political platform are judged at the ballot box.
The growing exchange between Obi and Anambra’s political establishment also shows how personal political history can become an important weapon during election campaigns.
The proper test in a democracy is therefore not which side can produce the loudest accusation, but whether voters have access to enough evidence to make an informed decision.
