Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has offered a candid account of marriage, saying there are moments when she wonders why she chose her husband, Captain Matthew Ekeinde.
Her remarks, however, were not presented as an announcement of marital trouble. Rather, she used the experience to challenge the idea that long marriages must always look romantic or perfect.
Speaking on the Chude Jideonwo Podcast, Omotola said there are occasions when she looks at her husband and wonders why she chose him, while also acknowledging that she sometimes notices other attractive men.
She said such moments do not necessarily destroy commitment.
ValidViewNetwork reports, Omotola explained that her decision to remain committed to her husband is not based on feeling deeply romantic every day. She said love, for her, involves a conscious choice supported by faith and shared values.
The actress also said she and her husband understand that they are individuals with separate journeys and therefore give each other space.
BEYOND THE ROMANTIC PHASE
Omotola’s comments touch on an increasingly common conversation about long-term relationships, the difference between attraction and commitment, and the pressure created by social media portrayals of supposedly perfect marriages.
She cautioned couples against pretending that marriage is permanently “lovey-dovey”, arguing that disagreements and difficult periods are part of being human.
She encouraged couples to communicate openly rather than hide problems behind appearances.
The actress has been married to Captain Ekeinde for decades, making her comments particularly notable because they come from someone discussing the realities of a long-term union rather than presenting an idealised version of marriage.
ValidViewNetwork reports, the central message from Omotola’s interview was not that marriage should be endured without question, but that successful relationships require choice, honesty, respect, communication and a willingness to recognise each partner’s humanity.
Her comments also offer a useful reminder that public appearances do not necessarily reveal the full reality of private relationships.
