The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a firm denial of the alleged assassination attempt on Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, a naval officer, which was recently circulated on social media. The purported attack reportedly took place at the NNPC junction along Kubwa Expressway on the evening of November 16, 2025. The police described the reports as false, misleading, and a fabrication designed to cause unnecessary fear among the public.
According to the official statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, around 6:15 p.m. on November 16, a routine stop-and-search operation was underway at the NNPC junction when a dark ash-colored Toyota Camry with fully tinted windows and a concealed number plate was stopped by the police patrol team. Standard police protocol required officers to approach and request the occupant’s identification and reasons for the vehicle’s concealments.
The occupant, who later was identified as Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima by three naval personnel who arrived at the scene, refused to provide identification or engage with the police team. Instead, he made several phone calls and closed the windows of the vehicle. After his identity was positively confirmed by his colleagues, the vehicle was allowed to proceed without any further incident.
Contrary to the viral stories claiming an assassination attempt or hostile confrontation, the police clarified that the encounter was peaceful and part of routine security checks. The FCT Police Commissioner, CP Miller Dantawaye, urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers during such operations and to avoid spreading unverified news that could destabilize community peace.
In a related development, the military has deployed personnel and patrol vehicles around Kubwa, following reports of unidentified vehicles trailing Lieutenant Yerima in the area. However, investigations are ongoing, and no evidence linking this to any assassination attempt has been confirmed by the police.
The FCT Police Command has also encouraged residents to promptly report any suspicious activities through the designated emergency contact lines: 08032003913, 08068587311, and CRU: 08107314192.
This clarification comes amid heightened attention to security operations in Abuja, underscoring the importance of distinguishing factual information from online rumors.
