Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission has admitted three virtual asset service providers into its Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme as the country continues to tighten oversight of the cryptocurrency industry.
The companies include Blockchain, Pisi Payments Solution Limited and Yellow Card Financial Limited. Their admission gives them Approval-in-Principle status to operate within the defined scope of the regulatory programme, subject to the SEC’s requirements.
The development matters because Nigeria has become one of Africa’s most active cryptocurrency markets.
Digital assets are used by Nigerians for investment, payments and cross-border transactions. But the rapid growth of the sector has also created regulatory challenges.
Consumers can lose money through fraudulent platforms. Investors can be exposed to market manipulation.
Poorly governed operators can create significant financial risks. The SEC’s regulatory approach is therefore an attempt to bring more order to a market that has grown faster than conventional regulation.
But consumers should understand what the latest announcement does not mean. Approval-in-Principle is not a blanket guarantee that every investment offered through an approved platform will make money.
Cryptocurrency remains a high-risk asset class. The regulator’s role is to establish standards for operators and protect the integrity of the market.
Investors still have responsibility for understanding what they are buying. The development also represents a shift in Nigeria’s attitude towards digital assets.
Rather than treating the sector solely as something to restrict, regulators are increasingly trying to create a framework within which legitimate operators can function.
That could help Nigeria attract investment into financial technology. It could also encourage companies operating in the sector to become more transparent.
But regulation must be matched by enforcement. Rules that exist only on paper will not protect consumers. The SEC must be prepared to sanction companies that breach the rules.
It must also make information about licensed and approved operators easily accessible to the public.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the SEC has admitted three virtual asset service providers into its regulatory incubation programme as Nigeria expands oversight of the cryptocurrency market.
The development is potentially positive for the industry. But Nigerians should not confuse regulation with a guarantee against investment losses. The crypto market remains volatile, and regulatory approval does not remove market risk.
