LAGOS — Six commercial shops were reduced to ashes on Sunday afternoon after an electrical power surge sparked a sudden fire outbreak at the Aswani Mechanic Village located in the Isolo axis of Lagos State.
According to official reports released by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the emergency alert was logged at approximately 12:26 pm, prompting an immediate deployment of rescue and firefighting personnel to the scene.
Upon arrival, responders met an active inferno that had already engulfed a cluster of workshops within the commercial hub. However, combined tactical operations executed by state firefighters and the LASEMA response team brought the situation under control, successfully creating a containment perimeter that halted the fire from spreading to adjacent properties and vehicle parks.
Safety Compliance and Official Assessment
Providing a breakdown of the incident, Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that swift evacuation protocols ensured absolute safety for all occupants in the immediate vicinity.
”Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was triggered by a power surge, affecting six shops,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. “There was no loss of life and no casualties recorded in the incident. All traders and artisans within the immediate area were safely evacuated.”
He added that while six structures were lost, prompt inter-agency synergy salvaged surrounding workshops and valuable assets. Recovery, dampening-down, and mop-up operations were subsequently conducted to eliminate the risk of a reignition, while the perimeter was secured to facilitate formal damage assessments.
In the wake of the incident, the Lagos State Government commended the speed and professionalism displayed by all responding agencies. Authorities have further issued a stern reminder to market operators, artisans, and workshop owners across the state to adhere strictly to electrical safety standards, avoid circuit overloading, and ensure that functional fire extinguishers are readily installed and serviced within their operational facilities.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another weekend emergency in the metropolis, where LASEMA operatives successfully contained a separate fire outbreak on Saturday morning at the Purple Crown Hotel along Awolowo Road in Ikeja, which similarly recorded no casualties.
