Osun LG Crisis Escalates as Policeman Is Injured During Secretariat Confrontation

Political tension in Osun State has spilled into another confrontation after a policeman was injured during a disputed attempt to take control of a local government secretariat in Ede.

The confrontation reportedly occurred at the Ede North Local Government secretariat in Oja Timi. The incident comes against the backdrop of the bitter political struggle over local government administration in the state.

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s Accord Party won the August 15 governorship election, defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.

Adeleke secured 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji polled 444,815 votes, according to the result declared by the Returning Officer. The election result gave Adeleke a renewed political mandate.

It did not, however, automatically resolve the state’s other political disputes. The local government crisis has continued to generate confrontation between competing political interests.

The presence of security personnel at the affected secretariats demonstrates how sensitive the situation has become.The danger is obvious.

Local government secretariats are public institutions. They should not become physical battlegrounds for political disputes.

Parties have constitutional and judicial avenues for challenging appointments, elections and administrative decisions. Those mechanisms may be frustrating.They may be slow.But they are preferable to confrontation.

Governor Ademola Adeleke now has an opportunity to demonstrate the difference between winning an election and governing after winning one.

His supporters must understand that victory carries responsibility. The opposition also has a responsibility to pursue its grievances through lawful channels. Osun has voted.Its political class must now allow institutions to work.
