Nigerian-American Poet Daniel Umemezie Named U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate

​CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – In a milestone for Nigerian-American representation in the arts, Daniel Umemezie has been appointed the 2026-2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate.

​Umemezie, who hails from Cedar Falls, Iowa, is the 10th recipient of the prestigious title and the second Nigerian-American to achieve the honor, following in the footsteps of 2023 laureate Salome Agbaroji.

​The U.S. Mission in Nigeria celebrated his appointment, describing him as a “gifted voice” whose work masterfully navigates the complexities of identity, heritage, and the dual realities of the Nigerian-American experience.
