Nigeria is exploring new fibre-optic routes through Niger and Benin Republic that could reduce internet connectivity costs in landlocked Burkina Faso by as much as 50 per cent.
The initiative forms part of Nigeria’s broader effort to extend digital infrastructure beyond its borders and strengthen regional connectivity.
Nigeria is already Africa’s largest telecommunications market. Its geographical position also gives it an opportunity to serve as a digital gateway for neighbouring countries.
The proposed arrangement could allow Burkina Faso to access alternative fibre routes instead of relying heavily on more expensive connectivity pathways.
The implications extend beyond cheaper internet. Lower connectivity costs can reduce the cost of doing business. They can make online education more accessible. They can improve digital financial services. They can help businesses communicate with customers and suppliers more cheaply.
For Nigeria, the project also represents a form of regional economic influence. Digital infrastructure is becoming increasingly important to diplomacy and trade. Countries that control or provide access to critical connectivity infrastructure can shape how neighbouring economies participate in the digital economy.
Nigeria’s challenge will be turning the proposal into functioning infrastructure. Fibre projects require financing, cross-border agreements, technical coordination and protection from damage or vandalism.
The commercial case must also be strong enough to sustain the network after construction.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Nigeria is exploring fibre routes through Niger and Benin as part of an initiative that could reduce Burkina Faso’s internet costs by up to half.
If successfully implemented, the project could demonstrate that Nigeria’s digital infrastructure ambitions extend beyond its domestic market.
