Retired Nigerian soldiers are preparing to protest at the Ministry of Defence over unpaid pension arrears and outstanding consequential adjustments.
The planned protest is scheduled for Wednesday and reflects a dispute that has persisted around the financial obligations owed to former military personnel.
The issue deserves attention because pension arrears are not ordinary government debts. For a retired soldier, delayed pension payments can mean delayed medical treatment, unpaid rent, difficulty feeding a household and dependence on relatives.
Many retirees have already left active service after decades of work. They cannot return to the workplace to compensate for a delayed payment.
The government therefore carries a particular responsibility to ensure that pension obligations are honoured. The planned demonstration also raises a wider question about the management of pension liabilities.
Why must retirees repeatedly protest before outstanding obligations receive urgent attention?
A pension system should provide certainty. Retirees should know when their payments will arrive and what amount they should expect.
When arrears accumulate, uncertainty becomes part of retirement. The Federal Government has previously faced protests from retired military personnel over unpaid entitlements.
The latest development therefore should not be treated as an isolated demonstration. It points to the need for a comprehensive review of outstanding obligations to former service personnel.
Government should publish the amount outstanding. It should explain what has already been paid.It should identify the unresolved components.
And it should provide a realistic timetable for settlement. Transparency would remove much of the suspicion surrounding pension disputes. It would also allow retirees to know whether government is actually resolving the problem.
The men and women who served the state deserve more than verbal assurances. They deserve a functioning pension system.
ValidViewNetwork reports that retired military personnel are preparing to protest at the Defence Ministry over outstanding pension arrears and related entitlements.
The Federal Government now has an opportunity to address the issue before another pension dispute becomes a prolonged confrontation.
