Nigerian troops have foiled an attempted mass abduction in Zamfara State and rescued nine civilians, including an infant, during a military operation.
The operation took place in Unguwar Rogo village in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area. The troops were operating under Operation Fansan Yamma, the military’s campaign against terrorists and armed criminal groups across the North-West.
The operation reportedly followed intelligence about an attack by armed terrorists. The rescued civilians were among those targeted by the attackers.
The significance of the operation goes beyond the number of people rescued. For communities repeatedly threatened by banditry and kidnapping, the presence of armed groups affects almost every aspect of daily life.
Farmers become afraid to reach their farms. Parents worry about children travelling. Traders hesitate to move between communities.
Some residents eventually abandon their homes altogether. A successful rescue operation therefore provides immediate relief.
But it does not remove the underlying threat. Security agencies must continue working on intelligence gathering, surveillance and sustained operations against the groups responsible.
Community cooperation is also crucial. Residents often possess information about unfamiliar movements and criminal networks that security agencies may not immediately detect.
The challenge is protecting those residents from retaliation.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Operation Fansan Yamma troops rescued nine civilians, including an infant, after foiling an attempted mass abduction in Zamfara State.
The operation is encouraging. But Nigeria’s security campaign must ultimately be measured by whether communities become safe enough for people to farm, trade, travel and raise their children without fear.
Rescue is important. Prevention is better.
