JOHANNESBURG — Newly crowned Miss World South Africa 2026, Romanda Hombir, has firmly addressed a storm of social media speculation questioning her nationality and background following her recent victory.
Hombir, a 27-year-old clinical audiologist and founder of the Caring Purpose Foundation, was crowned on Mandela Day at a ceremony in Pretoria. Following her triumph, online debates erupted regarding her surname and cultural origins, with some social media users drawing comparisons to previous high-profile national pageant controversies. Critics questioned her ties to KaNyamazane in Mpumalanga and raised unverified claims regarding her upbringing.
Addressing the public outcry, Hombir set the record straight, emphasizing that she understands the vigilance of citizens who want to ensure their national representatives are authentic, while firmly confirming her roots.
”I am proudly South African, born and bred in South Africa, from Nelspruit (Mpumalanga),” Hombir stated in a recent interview. Explaining the multicultural background that fueled the online confusion, she noted that her mother is of IsiSwati and IsiZulu heritage, while her father brings a mixed heritage including German and Angolan ancestry.
Supporters have heavily pushed back against the online scrutiny, condemning the intense policing of surnames and ancestral backgrounds. Allies and cultural commentators have rallied behind the beauty queen, warning against prejudice and highlighting that South Africa’s diverse “Rainbow Nation” naturally encompasses a rich mosaic of multi-ethnic roots.
Hombir remains focused on her national duties, preparing to carry the South African flag to the 75th Miss World Festival in Vietnam, where she aims to center her international platform on healthcare access and community upliftment.
