BIRMINGHAM — Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch has drawn a hard line against Reform UK, launching an impassioned defense of national inclusivity during a fiery keynote address at the Conservative Party conference. Rejecting attempts to gatekeep national identity, Badenoch made it clear that ethnic background does not determine true belonging.
The speech marks an escalation in an intensifying values-based clash on the right. Badenoch delivered a blistering rebuke targeting Nigel Farage’s party and recent defectors, explicitly condemning any political discourse that seeks to audit the heritage of citizens or their children.
“I don’t want to live in a country run by people who threaten journalists, call veterans ‘traitors’ and debate whether my mixed-race children are English,” Badenoch told delegates in Birmingham. “We must not let these people take us backwards. That is not the country we are.”
The sharp rhetoric follows a controversial intervention by former Home Secretary Suella Braverman. Braverman, who defected from the Conservative benches to Reform UK earlier this year, argued during a television appearance that individuals of specific ethnic heritages—such as British Asians—cannot claim an “English” identity, framing it strictly around ancestry.
Rejecting this premise entirely, Badenoch invoked the shared cultural memory of iconic Black English sporting figures like Ian Wright and John Barnes. She emphasized that historical figures and everyday citizens of diverse backgrounds have long formed an undisputed part of the nation’s fabric without their patriotism being subjected to public cross-examination.
“I don’t know whether you’ve noticed, but I am Black. I am British. I’m proud of my country, I’m proud of our history,” Badenoch asserted. Pointing directly to the political shift of her former colleagues, she added: “Reform MPs are openly questioning people’s identity. They are not like us; we are not like them. We are different.”
Ruling out any prospect of an electoral pact or ideological merger with Reform UK, Badenoch positioned her leadership around a commitment to political standards, character, and civic unity—dismissing the defectors as “drama queens” taking national conversation backward.
