UMUAHIA — In what marks a monumental milestone for healthcare delivery in the region, medical personnel at the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre have successfully performed the facility’s first-ever brain surgery, saving the life of a 19-year-old motorcycle accident victim.
The patient was rushed to the hospital on Sunday, October 4, trapped in a deep coma with an alarming Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of six out of 15, which subsequently plummeted to five. Emergency diagnostic investigations uncovered massive intracranial bleeding, with over 100 millilitres of a blood clot critically compressing the teenager’s brainstem.
Disclosing the breakthrough on Tuesday during a post-State Executive Council media briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, noted that the feat underscores the positive trajectory of Governor Alex Otti’s administration in revamping the state’s health sector.
Providing clinical insights into the high-stakes procedure, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche—a seasoned neurosurgeon—stressed that transferring the crash victim to an outside facility would have spelt certain death due to the rapid progression of his condition.
“Because we now have facilities to undertake brain surgery, and then we have brain surgeons in the state employed by His Excellency, that surgery was done,” Prof. Uche stated. He confirmed that the rigorous four-hour multidisciplinary operation successfully evacuated more than 100ml of blood clots, lifting the lethal pressure off the brainstem. The young patient has since begun moving his limbs while recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, hailed the milestone operation as a testament to the institution’s expanding capability to handle intricate medical emergencies right at home. According to Dr. Okwuonu, the successful intervention was masterminded by a specialized team led by Prof. Uche, Dr. Kalu, and other resident medical experts.
Dr. Okwuonu further revealed that the hospital’s workforce has experienced a dramatic expansion under the current management—surging from a solitary specialist consultant to a robust pool of 28 consultants. He added that the facility is poised to scale up its neurosurgical infrastructure for comprehensive brain and spine treatments, significantly curbing medical tourism while complementing ongoing kidney transplant initiatives in the state.
Broader Health Sector Strides
Beyond the landmark neurosurgical breakthrough, the Abia State Government outlined a series of sweeping healthcare developments:
- Counterpart Funding: The state has disbursed N502.1 million as counterpart funding under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, unlocking vital Federal Government interventions for vulnerable citizens.
- Advanced Equipment: Specialized trauma machinery tailored for orthopaedic, brain, and spine procedures is being deployed through a strategic partnership with a Swedish organization.
- Public Health Security: Preventive health measures have been activated across flood-prone areas, with authorities confirming zero outbreaks of Lassa fever, Ebola, diphtheria, or COVID-19.
- World Sight Campaign: The Administrator of the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi, announced the rollout of activities for the 2026 World Sight Day. Operating under the theme “Safe Eyes, Safe Roads and Safe Lives,” the campaign features free eye screenings for commercial drivers and plans for a dedicated vision corridor at the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal to mitigate traffic hazards linked to visual impairments.
