Nigerian-born football administrator Lola Ogunbote has taken another major step in her career after joining Chelsea FC Women as Head of Football Operations and Player Services.
Ogunbote has already begun work with the London club, taking responsibility for key operational aspects of the women’s team, including its pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand and matchday arrangements across the Women’s Super League and UEFA Women’s Champions League.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the appointment follows Ogunbote’s nearly five-year spell at Burnley Women, where she served as the club’s first Head of Women’s Football from 2021.
During her time at Burnley, she worked across recruitment, player development, performance structures and wider football operations. Her tenure culminated in Burnley’s promotion after the club won the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division title last season.
FROM CORPORATE LAW TO FOOTBALL
Ogunbote’s route into senior football administration has been unconventional. A UK-qualified lawyer, she previously worked at Goldman Sachs before leaving the corporate sector in 2016 to pursue a career in football.
She subsequently gained experience through Arsenal’s Gap Year programme and built experience in coaching, player development and football operations across different countries. Her career has since moved increasingly towards the strategic and operational side of the women’s game.
NEW ROLE AT CHELSEA
At Chelsea, Ogunbote has moved into a role that places her at the centre of the women’s team’s football operations. According to her professional announcement, she has already been involved in delivering Chelsea’s pre-season tour, moving Women’s Super League home fixtures to Stamford Bridge and coordinating Champions League home games at AFC Wimbledon.
She has also worked on matchday operations across the two competitions.
The appointment comes as Chelsea continue competing at the highest level of English and European women’s football.
HER CONNECTION TO NIGERIA
Although raised in East London after moving to Britain as a baby, Ogunbote has maintained a connection with Nigeria through her work supporting girls’ football.
She is an executive director of the United States-based Goals for Girls and brought the organisation’s leadership and football programme to Surulere, Lagos, in February 2026.
The two-day programme brought together 300 female students from 10 schools, combining football activities with leadership development.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Ogunbote’s career also earned her recognition on the 2024 Football Black List in the administration category.
Her move to Chelsea therefore represents not just a new club appointment but another significant step in the growing presence of professionals of Nigerian heritage in senior roles within international women’s football.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Ogunbote’s appointment reflects the increasingly important role of football administrators in building successful women’s teams. While players and coaches receive much of the public attention, senior operational roles cover recruitment structures, player services, logistics, competition requirements and the day-to-day systems that allow elite teams to function.
For Ogunbote, the Chelsea appointment adds a major European club to a career that has already taken her from corporate law and Arsenal to building Burnley’s women’s football structure and now to one of the biggest names in English women’s football.
