NIGERIAN WOMAN WANTS DNA TESTS BANNED, SAYS THEY TURN FAMILY SECRETS INTO MARRIAGE CRISES

A Nigerian woman has stirred a heated debate over marriage, infidelity and paternity after calling for DNA tests to be banned, arguing that the tests are destroying homes rather than saving them.

In a video circulating online, the woman questioned why married men would subject their children to paternity tests if they genuinely trusted their wives. Her argument was straightforward, if controversial: once a child is born during a marriage, the husband should accept the child as his, regardless of whether the woman may have been unfaithful.

And just in case anyone missed her position, she repeated her proposed solution several times: “Ban DNA.”

According to reports on her remarks, she argued that men also cheat but society appears to react differently when a woman becomes pregnant for another man.

“Men are always cheating, but when a woman cheats and brings in another child, it’s always a problem,” she said. She maintained that if a man marries a woman, he should accept any child she gives birth to during the marriage as his.

The woman questioned the logic of marriage where one partner remains sufficiently suspicious to demand scientific confirmation of a child’s paternity.

She asked why a man would marry a woman he does not trust and later turn to a DNA laboratory for answers. Her position effectively reduces the matter to a question of trust: if there is trust, she argued, there should be no need for a paternity test.

But that is where the conversation becomes considerably more complicated.

The counterargument, however, is that a DNA test does not alter biological parentage. It reveals it. That distinction is at the heart of the debate.

For a man who has lived for years believing a child is biologically his, discovering otherwise can be devastating. For a child, the discovery can also raise painful questions about identity, family and belonging.

But for some people, knowing the truth is itself considered important, particularly where questions of medical history, inheritance or legal parentage arise.

The woman’s remarks have predictably generated reactions online, with Nigerians debating whether DNA tests are a threat to marriage or simply a scientific tool being used to answer questions that already exist.

Some will likely agree with her that excessive suspicion can poison a relationship.

THE REAL PROBLEM MAY NOT BE THE TEST

While the woman’s call for a ban has generated attention, the deeper issue may be what leads couples to seek DNA tests in the first place.

A couple who trust each other may never consider one. A couple already dealing with accusations, suspicious circumstances or conflicting information may see the test differently.In that sense, the laboratory is often not where the marital crisis begins.
